Kozara Dance (Kozaračko kolo) is a traditional dance of Bosnian Serbs that was massively popularized after World War II and became a symbol of unity and resilience of all the peoples of Yugoslavia. It comes from Potkozarje, a region around Kozara mountain in the northwest of Bosnia, where an important battle between the partisan-led resistance movement and the Germans, along with their local allies, the Ustaše and Chetniks, took place at the beginning of the war. In the kolo, the gathered participants hold hands below the waist and intertwine in a turning formation with short steps, singing alternately in groups in octosyllabic and decasyllabic verses, performing a lyrical folk song.
Kozaračko kolo continues to inspire me, and I am constantly creating new interpretations of this beloved dance. This depiction honors the origins of the Kozaračko kolo, showing a traditional formation with male and female dancers in their typical Potkozarje traditional dresses.
